This note belongs to the transitional ruble series issued after the Soviet Union's formal dissolution in December 1991, yet still bearing the Gosbank SSSR imprint — a bureaucratic lag that made these notes legally valid across multiple newly independent states simultaneously. Several former republics continued circulating Soviet-era paper well into 1993 and beyond, simply because there was nothing else ready to replace it.
Goznak had been printing rubles at the Moscow facility since the 1920s, and the 1992 series represents its last output under Soviet institutional branding before the Russian Federation's own central bank infrastructure took over. The watermark protection on this issue was, by then, widely acknowledged as inadequate against the counterfeiting operations that had proliferated during the economic chaos of the late perestroika period.
