| Obverse lettering | REPUBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL 50 RÉIS * 1935 * (Translation: REPUBLIC OF THE UNITED STATES OF BRAZIL 50 REIS * 1935 *) |
| Reverse description | The reverse presents a right-facing draped bust of a female allegorical figure representing the Republic, rendered in moderate relief. The effigy is encircled by a ring of twenty-one small stars, symbolizing the Brazilian states, evenly spaced around the inner field. The field is otherwise plain, with no additional legend or inscription. The design is classical in style, consistent with the Republican allegorical imagery adopted by Brazil following the proclamation of the Republic in 1889. |

| Additional information |
Brazil's copper-nickel coinage of this period was produced under chronic fiscal pressure following the collapse of rubber export revenues and the disruptions of the First World War on imported raw materials. The 50 Réis denomination was effectively a ghost by the time this series ended — the réis had inflated to such absurdity that fifty of them bought almost nothing, and the 1942 monetary reform that introduced the cruzeiro swept the entire réis system away at a rate of 1,000 réis to one cruzeiro.
