The Natura series launched in 1994 as South Africa's fine gold bullion-collectible hybrid, pitched deliberately against the Krugerrand by showcasing wildlife rather than national iconography. The Meerkat issue falls within a sub-series devoted to the Kalahari, an ecosystem the mint revisited across multiple annual releases. Four-nines gold — .9999 fineness — was a deliberate step above the Krugerrand's .9167, a selling point aimed squarely at Asian and European collector markets that had developed a strong preference for fine gold over crown gold alloys.
