| Obverse description | Central device features a finely detailed Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani), the national emblem, depicted with a broad, layered canopy and gnarled trunk rising from a rocky base. The word ESSAI appears in the field to the right of the trunk, with the date 1980 and its Arabic numeral equivalent ١٩٨٠ displayed below the tree. The Arabic legend مصرف لبنان (Bank of Lebanon) arcs across the upper field, while the French legend BANQUE DU LIBAN curves along the lower periphery, flanked on each side by a five-pointed star. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

The Banque du Liban issued essais — trial strikes submitted for official approval — as a matter of standard practice before committing to full production runs. This 1980 piece arrived at a grim moment: the Lebanese Civil War, which had erupted in 1975, had by this point fractured the country's banking infrastructure and sent the pound into managed decline. Whether the design advanced to circulation is the only question worth asking about any essai, and this one did not.
