Egypt's 2019 commemorative circulation series was issued partly to rehabilitate public confidence in the banking system following years of currency instability — the pound had lost roughly half its value against the dollar after the 2016 IMF-mandated float. The power stations coin specifically references the Zouk and Mostorod projects, part of a Siemens-led expansion that added 14.4 gigawatts to Egypt's national grid in under two years, one of the fastest large-scale energy buildouts on record.
