Sudan's independence commemoration coinage of 1981 was issued by the Bank of Sudan during Nimeiry's government, a period when the country was already under severe economic strain following the collapse of the Addis Ababa Agreement and renewed civil conflict in the south. Gold issues from this program were produced in strictly limited quantities, primarily for export sale and foreign exchange generation rather than domestic circulation — few ever saw Sudanese hands.
