Comments

Clydesdale Bank's right to issue Scottish banknotes is backed pound-for-pound by Bank of England notes held in reserve — a requirement under the Banking Act 1845 that still governs Scottish note issuance today. The bank has operated continuously under that framework since it received its charter, making its higher denominations instruments of genuine commercial banking rather than central bank policy.

The £50 is the largest denomination in Clydesdale's circulating series, which limits its everyday handling considerably. David Thorburn served as Chief Executive of Clydesdale Bank from 2004, and his signature appears across the mid-2000s issues of this series.
