Additional information

Issued the year Makarios III died — August 1977 — this commemorative was released by a central bank operating under genuinely fractured circumstances. Cyprus had been partitioned since the Turkish military intervention of 1974, and Makarios himself had spent part of that period in exile after being deposed in a Greek junta-backed coup, only to return and serve out his final years as president of a truncated republic. The coin was struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant.
