Sudan's 2006 coinage reforms came during a period of acute economic pressure, with the country operating under sustained U.S. sanctions that complicated access to international banking systems and raw materials. The bimetallic format adopted here was part of a broader effort to introduce harder-to-counterfeit circulating coinage as the Sudanese pound was being prepared for redenomination — which arrived in 2007 when the pound replaced the dinar at a rate of 100 dinars to one pound, rendering this piastres-denominated piece obsolete almost immediately after striking.
