| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in dark grey-black on plain paper with a fine hatched border frame. At centre, a decorative cartouche in an ornate vignette style contains the denomination "50 Pfg." in large numerals with floral and foliate ornamental elements above and below. The title "Kleingeld-Ersatz" is rendered in bold Gothic Fraktur script across the upper field, with "für die Gemeinde Weisweil." below the cartouche, also in Fraktur. Weisweil is a small village on the Upper Rhine in Baden, and like hundreds of similar municipalities across Germany, it issued its own Kleingeldersatz — substitute small change — during the First World War when metal coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely after 1916.
