Treffurt is a small walled town on the Werra in what was then Thuringia, and its decision to issue notgeld in 1921 was purely practical — the post-war small-change shortage had left municipal authorities across Germany scrambling for fractional currency the Reichsbank couldn't supply fast enough. Arthur Kirchner's Erfurt shop printed tens of thousands of these local issues during this period, and the quality varied considerably from client to client.
The Townscape Series was also printed with the collector market in mind. By 1921 notgeld had become a deliberate souvenir trade, with many municipalities issuing more notes than they ever intended to redeem.
