Erfurt's municipal government issued a substantial run of Pfennig notgeld in 1921 as the postwar inflation began consuming small-denomination coinage from circulation. The "TH" designation distinguishes this yellow-paper variant within the 344 series — the letter code indicating a specific paper stock batch, a practice Hanf used across several Erfurt issues to differentiate printings that are otherwise typographically identical.
J. Hanf was a local Erfurt printer, not a specialist notgeld house, which accounts for the occasional registration inconsistencies seen across surviving examples in this series.
