Spielvereinigung Jena 08 was a sports club, not a bank or municipal authority — yet like hundreds of German civic organizations during the hyperinflationary spiral of the early 1920s, it issued Notgeld to fill the vacuum left by a catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coinage. The Reichsbank simply could not keep fractional currency in circulation fast enough; coins were hoarded or melted the moment their metal value exceeded their face value.

J. P. Himmer in Augsburg was a prolific Notgeld printer of the period, supplying dozens of issuers across Bavaria and beyond. Their output was competent commercial work produced at volume.
