Notgeld issued by a parish council rather than a municipal authority is uncommon enough to deserve notice. The Gemeindekirchenrat — the elected governing body of a Protestant congregation — stepped into the currency vacuum of 1921 because the civil administration either couldn't or wouldn't. Church-issued emergency money from rural Silesian villages is among the more thinly documented corners of the Notgeld period, and Ottendorf bei Bunzlau's output was small by any measure.
L. Fernbach in Bunzlau was a local commercial printer, not a specialist in banknote production. The town is now Bolesławiec in southwestern Poland, following the postwar redrawing of the Oder-Neisse border.
