Bockenem is a small market town in Lower Saxony, and this note is exactly what its issuer implies: a purely local emergency — printed by the town's own print shop, Buchdruckerei Heinr. Rehmann, for circulation within a community that simply ran out of small change. The Kleingeldsurrogat problem hit German municipalities hard after 1914 as coin metal was requisitioned, and towns without access to established security printers turned to whoever had a press.
Rehmann was a commercial printer, not a security house. No intaglio, no watermarked paper, no serial numbering of any sophistication — just functional Notgeld at its most stripped-down.
