Hohndorf is a small industrial village in the Erzgebirge foothills, and this 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the wave of municipal small-change scrip that flooded Germany when coin hoarding and metal shortages made Pfennig denominations effectively useless in everyday trade. Thousands of German municipalities printed their own emergency currency during this window, but the Ratsdruckerei R. Dulce in nearby Glauchau distinguished itself by marketing an artist-print quality — the "Künstlerdruck" designation signals a deliberate step above the purely functional scrip most small communes issued.

Hohndorf's population at the time was under two thousand. That a settlement of this size commissioned quality printing is the detail worth noting.
