Frankenhausen's 1921 notgeld issue came out of the same municipal cash crisis that pushed hundreds of small German towns to print their own emergency fractional currency as Reichsbank coin disappeared from circulation entirely. The designer credit — Walter Hegel — is unusual enough to note; most small-city notgeld commissions went to anonymous commercial illustrators, and named designers at this scale are worth tracking.

Richters und La in Erfurt handled a substantial volume of Thuringian notgeld printing during this period, which occasionally makes attribution tricky when plates were reused or adapted across multiple civic issues.
