Sondershausen was the capital of the tiny former principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, absorbed into Thuringia only in 1920 — meaning this Notgeld issue came from a municipal authority that had existed as an independent administrative unit for less than a year. The town printed its own emergency scrip rather than wait on a central supply that never reliably arrived.

Schedenbach's engraving work appears across several Thuringian Notgeld issues of this period; the collaboration with local designer F. Menge was typical of how smaller municipalities kept production costs down while maintaining a degree of visual distinction from generic inflationary scrip.
