Güsten is a small industrial town in Saxony-Anhalt, historically tied to sugar refining and chemical manufacturing. This note belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across Germany in 1921, when chronic coin shortages — driven by hoarding and metal speculation in the inflationary spiral following World War I — forced local authorities to print their own fractional currency. The Magistrat had no choice; small-denomination Reichsmark coinage had essentially vanished from everyday commerce.
Printed locally by Th. Büchel rather than one of the larger specialist Notgeld printers, production values were modest. H.K. Engel's design credit is unusual — most small-town Notgeld of this type went uncredited.
