Meißen's wartime Notgeld issues are among the more collectible of the Saxon municipal series — not for rarity, but because the city leaned into its identity as the home of Europe's first hard-paste porcelain manufactory, founded there in 1710. The city council, like hundreds of German municipalities, began issuing emergency currency after the Reichsbank restricted small-denomination coin circulation during the First World War. These notes filled a genuine transactional gap, not a ceremonial one.
Condition is the real variable here. Meißen Notgeld circulated hard at the retail level and paper casualties were common.
