Triptis is a small town in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921 it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — to compensate for the chronic small-change shortage that persisted long after the First World War ended. The Reichsbank simply could not keep low-denomination coins in circulation fast enough against rampaging inflation and hoarding behavior.
P. Schönheitz designed the series, a name associated with several Thuringian municipal Notgeld commissions of the period. The signatory, Stötzner, held the position of Vorstand — governing head — of the Stadtgemeinde at the time of issue.
