Süderbrarup is a small market town in Schleswig, and like hundreds of German municipalities it turned to Notgeld during the acute coin shortages of 1917–1921. These small-denomination emergency notes were a purely local solution — accepted by shopkeepers within the issuing community but worthless a few kilometers away. The 50 Pfennig value is the single most common denomination across the entire Notgeld phenomenon, produced by virtually every town, parish, and cooperative that participated.
