Appen is a small village in the Pinneberg district, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities, it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortages of 1917–1921. The Konrad Hanf printing house in Hamburg produced notgeld for numerous small issuers across the region, making it one of the more prolific printers of municipal small-change notes in northern Germany.
The watermarked paper is notable for a note of this denomination and issuer — many comparable village-level emissions used plain stock. Whether this reflects Hanf's standard supply at the time or a deliberate choice is unclear from surviving documentation.
