Comments

Schnelsen in 1921 was still a rural parish in the Amt Pinneberg, well outside Hamburg's city limits — that annexation wouldn't come until 1937. Like hundreds of small German municipalities in the early Weimar period, Schnelsen issued its own emergency currency (Notgeld) to compensate for the severe shortage of small-denomination coins, which had been hoarded or melted down in the inflationary chaos following the First World War.

Municipal Notgeld of this type was typically printed in short runs, often locally, and withdrawn and invalidated within months of issue — which is why survival rates vary so sharply between otherwise similar pieces.
