Schmalkalden sits in the Thuringian hills and carries a name outsized for its population — the 1531 Schmalkaldic League, that coalition of Protestant princes formed against Charles V, was organized there. Whether the Kreisausschuss leaned into that history when commissioning this note is unclear, but Kurt Jäckel's design work for the Wilisch press in the same town gives the piece a genuinely local character unusual even among Notgeld issues, which were frequently farmed out to Leipzig or Berlin printers.
Feodor Wilisch was a Schmalkalden-based firm, and the confluence of issuer, designer, and printer all operating within the same small town is uncommon for 1921 Notgeld.
