Schobüll is a coastal village near Husum on the North Frisian mainland — a settlement small enough that its decision to issue emergency currency is itself the story. German municipalities resorted to Notgeld in enormous numbers during and after the First World War, but Schobüll's output was negligible in scale, produced to relieve an acute shortage of small coin rather than for the collector trade that would later consume the movement. The truly collectable "Serienscheine" wave came after 1920; notes from places this small and this early tend to be functional objects first.
