Trittau is a small market town in Holstein, east of Hamburg, and like hundreds of German municipalities it issued its own Kleingeldersatz — emergency small-change notes — during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. These Gemeinde-issued Pfennig notes were a purely local solution to a national problem: the hoarding of metal coinage had stripped everyday commerce of its working currency, and the central government was slow to act at the fractional level.
Trittau's series is minor even within Notgeld collecting. No notable printing firm, no recorded design controversy.
