Malchin is a small market town in Mecklenburg, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities, it turned to local Notgeld issuance after the First World War created a catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coinage. Paul Lehsten of Charlottenburg was a minor commercial printer who handled Notgeld commissions for several small northern German towns — competent work, nothing distinguished.
The real interest in any Stadt Malchin Notgeld lies less in the notes themselves than in the bureaucratic absurdity of the system: municipal treasurers were simultaneously responsible for issuing, accounting for, and redeeming their own emergency currency, with no central oversight.
