Malchin's 50 Pfennig notgeld was produced by Paul Lehsten of Charlottenburg, a small commercial printer who handled municipal emergency currency commissions for several north German towns during the post-WWI currency shortages. These hyper-local issues were typically authorized by the town council as a stopgap when Reichsbank coin supplies dried up — Malchin, a modest market town in Mecklenburg, would have had limited leverage to secure faster or more prestigious printing arrangements.
Lehsten's output for small municipalities tends to be plainly executed. Collector interest in Malchin issues is driven primarily by regional completionists rather than broad market demand.
