Bodenwerder's claim to fame is Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von Münchhausen, born there in 1720, and the town has never been shy about that association. This 1919 Stadtsparkasse notgeld is a product of the post-war coin shortage that prompted thousands of German municipalities to issue their own small-denomination emergency money — the Prussian province of Hanover alone generated hundreds of distinct types.
Selmar Bayer operated out of the Kreuzberg district of Berlin and handled notgeld commissions for numerous smaller issuers during 1919–1921. Volume work, competently executed.
