| Obverse lettering | Gutschein über 50 Pfg. Die Gültigkeit erlischt 3 Monate nach öffentlicher Bekanntmachung. Ballenstedt Harz, den 28. Sept. 1920 Der Magistrat Stadt Ballenstedt im Ost-Harz |
| Reverse description | Central vignette in fine line engraving shows a woodland scene at the Dachsteich, with slender deciduous trees in the foreground and a light-filled clearing beyond. A decorative border of repeating guilloche rosette cartouches frames the composition on all sides. An oval tablet at top centre carries the erroneous denomination numeral "25" printed in reddish-orange, and a rectangular cartouche at foot bears the caption "Am Dachsteich". |

Ballenstedt was a small Anhalt spa town, and its 1920 Notgeld series was unremarkable by the standards of the period — until someone caught the denomination mismatch. The reverse of this note reads 25 Pfennig while the obverse correctly states 50 Pfennig. The error was not corrected mid-run; both variants entered circulation, making this misprint a production failure rather than a proof escapee.
The corrected version exists, catalogued separately. Collectors pursuing the Ballenstedt series need both to tell the story properly.
