Comments

Königswinter notgeld from the inflation years tends to be locally themed to the point of parochialism, and this Verkehrsverein issue is no exception — the Verkehrsverein being a tourist promotion association rather than a bank or municipal authority, which made it an unusual but not unprecedented issuer of emergency small change in the Rhineland during 1921. The legal basis for such organizations issuing notgeld was never clean; most operated on tolerance rather than formal authorization.

Krings was a local Rhineland graphic artist whose name appears on several regional notgeld issues from this period. Attribution is confirmed in the plate, not inferred.
