Vereinigte Lichtspiele — "United Cinemas" — was a cinema chain operating in the twin municipalities of Wilhelmshaven and Rüstringen on Germany's North Sea coast. This notgeld piece was issued during the hyperinflationary Kleingeldenot of the early 1920s, when small-denomination coin effectively vanished from circulation and local businesses, municipalities, and institutions flooded the market with their own emergency scrip to make change. A cinema issuing its own currency is unusual even by the eccentric standards of German notgeld.

The watermarked paper and Allmers printing suggest this was produced to a reasonable standard for the type. Varel, a small town roughly 40 kilometers from Wilhelmshaven, hosted several notgeld printers serving the regional market during this period.
