Friedrichroda issued this note in conjunction with the Thüringer Landwirtschaft-, Industrie- und Gewerbe-Ausstellung — a regional agricultural, industrial, and trade exhibition held in Thuringia in 1921. Exhibition notgeld of this kind occupied a strange middle ground: technically valid local currency, but clearly designed as collectibles from the outset, printed in limited runs and sold directly to visitors. The watermark is an unusual security feature for notgeld at this price point, suggesting the issuer invested more in production than strictly necessary for small-denomination emergency scrip.
