Wilster is a small market town in Holstein, and like hundreds of German municipal savings banks in 1920, its Sparkasse issued its own fractional notgeld as coinage shortages made small transactions increasingly unworkable. The inflationary pressure that would eventually detonate into hyperinflation was already grinding at the currency by this point, and local institutions stepped in where the Reichsbank could not practically reach.
Theodor Gries of Hamburg handled a large volume of municipal notgeld printing for northern German clients during this period — a regional workhorse printer rather than a prestige house. Nothing about this issue is rare or eccentric; its interest lies in being a minor but genuine document of civic financial improvisation at the Weimar Republic's unstable beginning.
