| Additional information |
Schorndorf's canning industry relied heavily on seasonal and migrant labor, and factory tokens like this one from the Leibbrand cannery were a common mechanism for controlling wages within a closed economy — workers spent their earnings at company-affiliated stores, and the firm recovered a portion of its own payroll. Zinc was the material of necessity here; wartime metal restrictions during the First World War period made aluminum and copper increasingly unavailable for private token issuers.
