| Obverse description | Within a beaded border, the city arms of Schmölln are depicted centrally: a crowned and enthroned figure set within a Gothic arch surmounts a lower panel featuring a radiant sun rising over a crowned shield, flanked by wheat ears. Schmölln's iron notgeld issues of 1920 belong to the wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany following the post-WWI metal shortages and the Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small change. Iron was an uncomfortable substitute — prone to rust, rejected by vending machines, and resented by the public — yet dozens of Thuringian towns struck it anyway because the alternative was commercial paralysis at the pfennig level.
