| Obverse description | Within a beaded border, the city arms of Schmölln are depicted centrally: a crowned and enthroned figure set within a Gothic arch surmounts a lower panel featuring a radiant sun rising over a crowned shield, flanked by wheat ears. The abbreviation 'S.-A.' (Saxe-Altenburg) appears within the arch. The legend 'STADTRAT SCHMÖLLN' arcs around the upper field in bold raised Latin letters, and the date '1920' is inscribed in the lower field beneath the heraldic device. |

Schmölln's iron notgeld issues of 1920 belong to the wave of municipal emergency coinage that flooded Germany following the post-WWI metal shortages and the Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small change. Iron was an uncomfortable substitute — prone to rust, rejected by vending machines, and resented by the public — yet dozens of Thuringian towns struck it anyway because the alternative was commercial paralysis at the pfennig level.
