| Obverse description | Outer pearl border frames a circular legend reading MAGISTRAT OBERNZELL, separated by a floral ornament, a five-pointed star, and a floral ornament at the base. An inner rope circle encloses the municipal coat of arms of Obernzell at center, depicting a rampant lion on a plain shield beneath a decorative cartouche with foliate crest, supported by ornamental scrollwork on either side. Three small decorative devices — two rosettes flanking a central star — appear in the lower field between the inner rope border and the outer legend. |

Obernzell, a small market town on the Danube in Lower Bavaria, issued iron notgeld during the acute coin shortages of World War I, when imperial authorities were systematically withdrawing silver and copper from circulation for war materiel. Municipal and commercial bodies across Germany stepped into the gap with locally issued emergency pieces, and iron — abundant as a byproduct of wartime industrial production — became the default substitute metal for these small-denomination stopgaps.
