Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz issued this emergency coin — Notgeld — in 1921 as Germany's postwar coinage shortage left municipalities scrambling to supply small change. Iron was an uninspiring but practical choice by this point; the metal had flooded civic minting after copper and nickel became restricted during the war years. Neumarkt, a modest Bavarian market town with no particular monetary infrastructure, was one of hundreds of smaller communities forced into the role of currency issuer by circumstance rather than authority.
