Leutenberg issued this zinc notgeld piece in the final weeks of the First World War, when the imperial government's requisition of copper and nickel for munitions had stripped municipalities across Thüringen of the raw materials needed to produce small change. Zinc was the reluctant substitute — cheap, available, and deeply unpopular with the public for its tendency to corrode and become illegible within months of issue. The Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt principality ceased to exist entirely by November 1918, meaning this coin outlasted its issuing political authority almost immediately.
