Additional information

Schusters Warenhaus was among hundreds of German retailers and municipalities that issued emergency coinage — Kriegsgeld — during the First World War after nickel and copper were requisitioned for military use. Zinc, harder to strike cleanly and prone to oxidation, became the default substitute. These privately issued tokens circulated locally by necessity, accepted at face value within the issuing business and its immediate community, but with no guarantee beyond the issuer's own solvency — which, for many Leipzig businesses by 1918, was far from certain.
