Schalkau's 1921 Notgeld series belongs to the height of German municipal emergency currency, when hundreds of small Thuringian towns issued their own paper rather than scramble for an increasingly worthless Reichsmark supply. The "History Series" designation indicates a thematic educational program common to collector-targeted Notgeld of this period — towns competed for philatelic buyers as much as for functional currency, and print runs were often deliberately limited to drive secondary market demand.
The April 1945 print date in the reference data is almost certainly a cataloging artifact or error. By that date, Schalkau was days from American occupation and no municipal printing operation was producing Notgeld — the series dates to 1921 issue regardless of what that field reflects.
