Obverse description Two armoured medieval knights in woodcut-style vignettes flank the central denomination, each figure holding a lance and a heraldic shield — the left bearing the arms of Schalkau, the right displaying a quartered coat of arms. The large numeral '50' appears in bold Gothic type within a rectangular frame at centre, below which the text 'Pfennig / Notgeld der Stadt Schalkau/Thür.' is set in blackletter script against an orange-red underprint. The lower margin carries the validity legend and serial number alongside the issuing authority 'Bürgermeisteramt'.
