Obverse description The city coat of arms of Hersbruck, depicting a crenellated fortified gateway with two flanking towers and a portcullis, occupies the central field within a raised inner circle. The municipal legend STADTGEMEINDE HERSBRUCK arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1917, flanked by two raised pellets, appears at the base of the legend below the inner circle. The design is rendered in a plain, utilitarian style characteristic of World War I German notgeld coinage.

Additional information

Hersbruck's 1917 zinc notgeld was issued as the Imperial German war economy systematically drained copper and nickel from municipal circulation — by mid-1917, the Reichsbank had effectively ceded small-denomination coinage to local authorities across Bavaria. Hundreds of German towns issued their own emergency pfennig pieces that year, but survival rates vary sharply by issuer. Hersbruck, a small market town in the Pegnitz valley east of Nuremberg, produced in modest quantities relative to larger Franconian municipalities.
