Göttingen's Chamber of Commerce issued this note in 1917 under the emergency currency provisions that pushed municipal and commercial bodies across Germany into the business of paper money. J. Adolf Schwarz in Lindenberg im Allgäu was a specialist Notgeld printer — the firm handled a substantial volume of these chamber and municipal issues during the middle war years, which accounts for the relatively consistent print quality seen across their output even as paper stocks tightened.
Designer Hinz Schiestle's involvement places this among the more considered small-denomination pieces of the period rather than the purely utilitarian fare some chambers commissioned.
