Grünberg — today Zielona Góra in western Poland — issued this porcelain notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's defeat in 1918. The Meissen state porcelain works and several smaller manufacturers supplied municipalities across Saxony and Silesia with fired ceramic blanks as federal coinage simply failed to reach local circulation in sufficient quantities. Brown-glazed examples from Grünberg are catalogued as a distinct variant from the white or grey-bodied pieces of the same issue, suggesting more than one production run or supplier.
