| Obverse description | Central oval vignette with a portrait of a German Shepherd dog wearing a Red Cross medallion, flanked by two silhouette scenes: at left, a seated figure with a dog, and at right, a standing figure with a cane guided by a dog, both set against a pale underprint of palm fronds. The denomination '50 Pfennig' appears in ornamental panels at upper left and right, with the main title inscription in bold Gothic lettering across the top. The Deutscher Verein für Sanitätshunde — the German Association for Medical Dogs — trained and supplied search-and-rescue dogs for the military and Red Cross during the First World War. That this organization issued its own emergency currency in 1921 places it squarely in the Notgeld wave that followed Germany's postwar coinage collapse, when hundreds of municipalities, clubs, and private bodies printed their own scrip to fill the gap left by a shortage of small change.
An animal welfare and paramilitary auxiliary issuing fractional paper currency is unusual even by Notgeld standards.
