The Kyffhäuser-Bund, founded in 1900 as an umbrella organization for German veterans' associations, issued this 50 Pfennig note during the notgeld period of 1921 — when the Reichsmark's collapse pushed hundreds of civic, commercial, and political organizations to print their own emergency fractional currency. For a veterans' organization operating out of Berlin with a membership numbering in the millions, issuing notgeld was both practical and a visible assertion of institutional weight.
The signatory, General der Infanterie Josias von Heeringen, had commanded the German First Army during the opening advance into France in 1914. His title here is Generaloberst Präsident, reflecting the honorary rank retained after retirement.
