Burg auf Fehmarn issued this zinc notgeld in 1917 as wartime metal requisitions stripped municipal reserves of copper and nickel. Fehmarn's island geography made resupply erratic, and local authorities across Germany were largely left to arrange emergency coinage independently — the result being hundreds of distinct municipal types, most struck in equally undistinguished zinc. The Funck and Menzel catalog variants for this type suggest at least minor die differences exist across the known population.
