Buchdruckerei J. Reiss Wwe. was a Munich printing house, not a bank — its widow-operated successor issued this 50 Pfennig Notgeld on its own authority during the acute small-change shortages that gripped Germany after 1914. Private commercial printers occasionally became their own issuers during this period, which created the odd situation of a firm guaranteeing the value of notes it had itself produced.

The designer credit to Danzer is unusual enough to note — most Notgeld of this type went unsigned.
